The 2024 Copa America kicks off on Friday 14th June as defending champions Argentina face Canada at the Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta, Georgia, USA.
Argentina were 1-0 winners over hosts Brazil 3 years ago, winning the tournament for the first time since 1993. 18 months later Lionel Scaloni’s side would go on to win the FIFA World Cup for the third time in their history.
USA will be hosting the tournament for the second time in four additions. And just like when they previously hosted it in 2016, there will be 32 teams – the two biggest tournaments in the competition’s history.
The bookmakers have made Argentina the 7/4 favourites, ahead of rivals Brazil at 9/4. With the World Cup winning head coach and a number of players from that squad still in tact, it’s easy to see why.
Lionel Messi, Lautaru Martinez, Julian Alvarez, Angeli Di Maria, Alejandro Garnacho, Alexis Mac Allister, Exequiel Palacios, Enzo Fernandez, Cristian Romero and Emiliano Martinez are all included.
For some it will be difficult to overlook Brazil, particularly with the attacking talent supplied by UEFA Champions League and Spanish La Liga champions Real Madrid – Vinicius Jr, Rodrygo and 17-year-old Endrick. Add the likes of Alisson, Danilo, Marquinhos defensively. However, it’s a very inexperienced squad that head coach Dorival Junior is taking to the United States with him.
