Tennessee Titans and NFL fans suffered devastating news on Monday as superstar running back Derrick Henry will be ruled out for at least 6-10 weeks after undergoing surgery on a broken metartarsal.
The back-to-back NFL rushing leader suffered the injury during Sunday’s 34-31 victory over AFC South rivals Indianapolis Colts. The former Heisman Trophy winner had been a staggering 288 yards ahead of anyone else in the rushing yards category through week 8.
Many felt Henry was on course to be this season’s MVP, particularly with Tennessee surprising many with a 6-2 record, including victories over the Buffalo Bills, Kansas City Chiefs and a clean sweep of the Colts.
Whilst the NFL is down one superstar for the remainder of the season, the NFL MVP race is still expected to be a battle between numerous stars, and with no clear leader currently.
Bills’ Josh Allen currently leads the way, as he and his team sit atop of the AFC East with a 6-2 record. His 3/1 odds are ahead of defending Super Bowl champion Tom Brady. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers Quarterback is having another sensational season and is 9/2 to win the award.
Brady previously won the award in 2007, 2010 and 2017 with the New England Patriots.
The Arizona Cardinals were the last unbeaten team this season prior to Thursday’s defeat against the Green Bay Packers. The NFC West team had a late opportunity to win the game but quarterback Kyler Murray threw the ball into the hands of cornerback Rasul Douglas, with his teammate AJ Green not even ready for the pass.
Prior to that, the 2019 overall number 1 draft pick had been receiving lots of praise for his performances, which includes victories over the Titans and LA Rams. Murray is currently 5/1 third favourite in the NFL MVP race.
Value seems to be on defending champion Aaron Rodgers, who is a surprisingly high 14/1 despite another stellar campaign to date. Lamar Jackson shouldn’t be overlooked at 20/1 either, whilst Patrick Mahomes is 40/1, which could prove valuable if he can find his form of old in the final 9 weeks of the regular season.
The top players in the 2021 NFL MVP race are as follows:
Josh Allen 3/1
Tom Brady 9/2
Kyler Murray 5/1
Matthew Stafford 6/1
Dak Prescott 15/2
Aaron Rodgers 14/1
Lamar Jackson 20/1
Justin Herbert 30/1
Derek Carr 35/1
Patrick Mahomes 40/1
Joe Burrow 50/1
Ryan Tannehill 80/1
Cooper Kupp 100/1
