RB Leipzig vs Atletico Madrid preview

RB Leipzig and Atletico Madrid both play their first Champions League match since March and with a place in the semi-finals at stake.

The German Bundesliga outfit will have to do without star striker Timo Werner on Thursday following his sale to Chelsea following the end of the domestic campaign.

Julian Nagelsmann’s side performed very well to get to this stage, winning their group and then thrashing Tottenham Hotspur 4-0 in the Round of 16 before the disruption.

Meanwhile, Atletico Madrid were far from themselves before the disruption, but then went unbeaten during the restart and finished in the top four once again.

The La Liga side head into this single-legged quarter-final as the favourites but I don’t see it being as straightforward as that. Strike Joao Felix is yet to live up to his pricetag whilst their defence will be greatly tested by the RB Leipzig attack, regardless of the loss of Werner.

Marcel Sabitzer, Patrick Schick, Emil Forsberg and Yussuf Poulsen are all goalscorers too and Christopher Nkunku is a big threat down the wing.

Expecting a close affair, this one could go to extra-time.
