Two weeks before the start of the 2020 Australian Open, Serena Williams has been made the bookmakers’ favourite.
The 23-time singles Grand Slam winner currently has odds of 11/2 to go all the way at Melbourne Park.
Williams’ odds would not suggest she’s clear favourite by any means. She is followed by 2019 French Open winner Ashleigh Barty at 8/1 and defending Australian Open champion Naomi Osaka, at 9/1. Osaka beat Petra Kvitova 7-6 5-7 6-4 in an epic final almost 12 months ago.
2019 Wimbledon champion Simona Halep is next on the bookmakers’ list with odds of 10/1. However, the world number 1 has never won this event.
There have been different winners of this event for each of the past four years and Naomi Osaka is the only player to have won consecutive Grand Slams since Serena Williams in 2012. The women’s tennis game is currently very exciting and wide open.
The Australian Open always proves to be an exciting and often unpredictable event. 19-year-old Canadian sensation Bianca Andreescu shocked the world in September this year by winning the US Open.
