Favourites Egypt dumped out of 2019 AFCON

2019 AFCON hosts and pre-tournament favourites Egypt have been knocked out of the tournament at the last 16 stage by unfancied South Africa.

Thembinkosi Lorch scored the game’s only goal five minutes from time in a game that Stuart Baxter’s side certainly deserved to win.

Egypt certainly didn’t show up on the night, having won Group A with a maximum nine points – five more than runners-up Uganda. They didn’t concede a single goal in their opening three matches.

In contrast, South Africa only progressed from Group D with three points – one win and two defeats, as the fourth and final best third-placed teams.

In the other match on Saturday, Nigeria were 3-2 winners over Cameroon in a thrilling encounter at the Alexandria Stadium in Alexandria. Gernot Rohr’s side will now face South Africa in the quarter-finals on Wednesday 10 July 2019.

Senegal have been installed as the bookmakers’ new favourites to go all the way in Egypt this summer. They were 1-0 winners over Uganda in their second round tie, setting up a quarter-final match against Benin. Senegal are 15/8 to win the competition, whilst Nigeria are second favourites at 4/1. They are on opposite sides of the draw.
