33/1 15-year-old shocks Venus Williams at Wimbledon

Five-time Wimbledon champion Venus Williams has been dumped out of Wimbledon by 15-year-old Cori Gauff.

Gauff, from Atlanta, Georgia, USA, becane the youngest person to qualify for Wimbledon in the Open Era since it began in 1968 when she beat Belgium’s Greet Minnen 6-1 6-1 in the third and final qualifying round.

The teenager is set to become a household name in the world of tennis in the coming hours, having shocked Venus Williams 6-4 6-4. It is the first time 39-year-old Williams has been eliminated in the first round at SW19 since her debut in 1997.

Gauff had been priced at 33/1 to some bookmakers to pull off the upset in her first Grand Slam.

Venus Williams had won two of her five Wimbledon ladies singles titles before Gauff was even born. She is currently ranked number 44 in the world, compared to the 15-year-old’s 313 ranking.

Cori Gauff will now play Slovakia’s Magdalena Rybarikova, twice her age, in the second round.
