Egypt kickoff AFCON 2019 as favourites

Egypt kick off the 2019 African Cup of Nations on Friday evening as both the hosts and favourites.

Liverpool forward Mohamed Salah is expected to be the key player in the team and throughout the tournament. The 27-year-old will certainly want a better performance than at the World Cup last summer where his side were eliminated after two group games after he headed into the tournament with an injury picked up in the Champions League final.

The Egyptians are 4/1 favourites but are closely followed by Nigeria, Senegal and Morocco in the betting market. Cameroon won the tournament two years ago.

This edition of the African Cup of Nations is the first time it has been held this time of year. For the first time there will be as many as 24 nations competing, with Burundi, Madagascar and Mauritania all making their debuts.

Egypt face Zimbabwe at the Cairo International Stadium in Friday’s opener, with the tournament concluding at the same stadium on Friday 19 July 2019.
